# Offline mode

> Keep writing even when the connection drops. Covers the offline badge, the beta warning dialog, and how changes are merged once you reconnect.

pensiv does not stop when the internet drops. You can keep writing the manuscript you were on, and the changes made in the meantime pile up on this device and go to the server once the connection comes back.

## When you go offline

When the connection drops, an Offline Mode Beta dialog appears once. The note that your changes are saved locally is followed by Important warnings: and three cautions below it. Press I Understand and it does not appear again on this device; from then on you go straight into offline mode.

## The offline badge

An Offline badge appears in the tab bar at the top of the work screen. If there are items that have not gone to the server yet, a number is attached beside it. Hover the badge and it tells you, as in "3 items are not updated on the server and will be updated when we get back online."

Click the badge and it checks the connection on the spot. While it checks, it changes to Checking connection.... Even if you do not click it, it checks again by itself every 10 seconds while the window is in front.

When the connection comes back, a sync runs automatically and the badge becomes Syncing. Hover it and you see which stage it is on, such as Fetching from server or Resolving conflicts.

<Warning>
  When you reconnect, conflicts are resolved by timestamp. The most recent change overwrites older changes. If you edit the same manuscript offline on a laptop and on a desktop, only the last saved version is kept. It is safer not to edit offline on several devices at the same time.
</Warning>

## To see the state in detail

The last sync time and the number of pending changes are in Sync status, in the Sync Settings tab under settings. The Check connection and Sync now buttons are here too.

If there is no connection from the moment you launch the app, a You're offline notice covers the whole screen. Press Refresh, or wait for the connection to come back and it reloads by itself.
