# Updates and the changelog

> The flow for checking and installing a new version, and the changelog dialog that tells you what changed.

The app looks for a new version when it launches and every time the window comes to the front. It does not fetch one behind your back, so the download starts only after you press the button.

## Getting a new version

With a project open, an **Update Available** card comes up at the very bottom of the left sidebar, with a **Download Update** button inside it.

Press the button and every open window closes, replaced by a small window holding only the logo and a progress bar. It moves from **Checking for updates...** to **Downloading new updates**, with the downloaded size and the per-second speed below.

Once it finishes, a system dialog appears. The title is **\[pensiv] Update Ready** and the body is "A new update has been downloaded. Restart now to install?" Choose **Restart & Install** and the app goes off and on with the install done. Choose **Later** and you carry on with the version you have.

If a new version is caught while the app is launching and there is no window yet, that window opens and downloads straight away, without going through the card.

## When checking or downloading is blocked

With the network down, a **\[pensiv] Update Error** dialog appears. A note comes with it, as in "We're having trouble checking for updates. Starting in offline mode." Press **OK** and the app opens in offline mode. Errors that are not the network's fault pass quietly and the app comes up on the version you have.

## Seeing what changed

On Home it is **Changelog** in the left sidebar, and inside a project it is the gift icon on the bottom row of the sidebar. Press either and the changelog dialog opens. If there is an entry you have not read, a dot is attached to the icon, and it opens by itself the first time you launch a new version. The entries it fetches are matched to the version and the language you are on, so if you are writing in English you get English entries.

The header line carries the version and the date, and **Previous** · **Next** move you through the entries back and forth. Press **Next** on the most recent entry and it closes, and an entry you have moved past is marked as read. **Changelog** on the right opens the full changelog page in a browser.

An entry can hold images, video, and collapsed sections, and sometimes carries a button that takes you to settings or the command palette. Press it and the dialog closes as it moves you to that spot.

The version number you are on is written at the very bottom of settings → **Profile**.
