# Installing and making themes

> How to preview and install a community theme, how to assign themes to the light and dark slots, and how to import one from a file or build one on the web.

Open settings and go to **Appearance**. Near the bottom of the page there are two cards, **Themes** and **Community themes**. The first is your own library, the second the list other people have uploaded.

## Picking one from the community

The search box is **Search themes**. Beside it sit the **All · Light · Dark** tabs, **Liked**, and the **Trending · Popular · Downloads · Recent** sort, all in one row. Themes already installed carry an **Installed** mark. If the search finds nothing, **No themes match your search.** comes up instead.

Press a card and the screen changes to that theme at once. A bar appears at the bottom with the name, the version, and the author, asking for **Install** or **Cancel**. You can keep using the app while previewing, so open a manuscript and check how the body text looks. **Cancel** returns you to the theme you were using.

If you pick a light-only theme while using dark mode, the app switches to light. Cancel and it returns to the mode you were in; install and that mode stays. When the install finishes, a **Theme added: …** notification comes up with **Undo** attached to it for a moment.

## Assigning to light and dark

With no themes at all, the **Themes** card shows only **No themes yet — install one from the community below.** Once you have one, the card folds into two sections, **Light** and **Dark**. Each theme has the modes it supports, so a light-only theme goes into the Light section alone. An empty section leaves only the line **No imported themes support this mode.** Use the switch at the right of a row to set the theme for that mode, and the trash can to delete it.

If you have a theme installed from the community, a **Check for updates** button appears. When there is a new version, **v… available** is added to the row and **Update** swaps it in. When there is none, it tells you only **All themes are up to date.** Themes imported from a file have no source, so they are left out of the check.

## Importing and making your own

**Import theme** takes a `.pnsv-theme` or `.json` file. In the desktop app, double-clicking a `.pnsv-theme` file brings up the same preview bar.

Press **Create theme** and the theme editor on the pensiv homepage opens in your browser. Send a finished theme to the app and the same preview comes up as when you pick one from the community.
