# 3.4 Canvas

> A space to place thoughts and files and experiment with structure

The canvas is where you\
**place thoughts, files, and their relationships in space** and try out structure.

Before you write sentences,\
or when you want to step back from what you’ve written,\
the canvas **pauses the flow and makes you look at structure first**.

***

This section covers:

* [3.4.1 What can you do on the canvas?](/en/guide/canvas/what-you-can-do)
* [3.4.2 Basic canvas interaction](/en/guide/canvas/interaction)
* [3.4.3 Connecting files, sheets, and documents](/en/guide/canvas/connect-files)
* [3.4.4 Visualizing relationships and extending thought](/en/guide/canvas/visualization)
* [3.4.5 When to use the canvas](/en/guide/canvas/when-to-use)

## Summary

The canvas is not where you write the answer.\
It’s **where you move things until the answer appears**.

If writing directly in a document is hard,\
put it on the canvas first.\
Once structure is visible,\
the next sentence follows more easily.
