# 3.5 Notes

> Where thought lives before it becomes a file

Notes in Pensiv are\
where thought lives **before it becomes a "file."**

They’re not for polish.\
They’re for **keeping unformed thought as it is**.

If the document moves toward a result,\
notes are **the in-between stage** before that result.

This section covers:

* [3.5.1 Notes as a temporary store for thought](/en/guide/notes/as-thinking-store)
* [3.5.2 Two ways to view notes](/en/guide/notes/file-vs-document-notes)
* [3.5.3 How document notes and navigation notes relate](/en/guide/notes/navigation-notes)
* [3.5.4 Note card structure · 3.5.5 When to use notes](/en/guide/notes/expand-to-document-plot)

Notes are an unfinished space.\
But that unfinished state is **part of the process**, not neglect.

If a thought doesn’t have a place yet,\
don’t force it into shape — put it in a note.

In Pensiv,\
every thought is meant to **find a place later**.
