# 5.1 What is a task?

> Definition of tasks, where they’re managed, what they mean for structure

In Pensiv, tasks are\
not a separate checklist.

A task is always\
**an action that comes from a specific file**.

***

## Where are tasks managed?

You can work with tasks in two places.

### 1) Tasks in the navigation bar

From the top navigation bar\
you can open the task icon to see all tasks.

There you can:

* See the full task list
* Group by inbox (or other groups)
* Add tasks quickly (+)
* Check off and change status

This is where you\
**manage execution** for the whole project.

***

### 2) Tasks in the file header

In each file’s header\
you can see tasks linked to that file.

There you can:

* See only tasks from this file
* Check off and complete
* Work on edits without losing context

So tasks\
are always tied to files.

***

## What tasks mean for structure

A normal to-do\
only records "what to do."

In Pensiv a task\
always carries **where it came from**.

* An edit that came from a document
* A follow-up from a plot card
* A deadline for a specific scene

When you click a task\
you go straight to that file.

***

## Main idea

> A task is not just an item to do.\
> It’s an **action point with a place in the structure**.

In the navigation bar\
you see the big picture.\
In the file header\
you act in context.

When both are in use,\
tasks become more than a list —\
they become the **execution layer** of the project.
