# 5.3 How tasks link to files

> Tasks created from file header vs. from inbox

In Pensiv,\
**where you create a task** decides how it’s linked.

Tasks look the same,\
but **context is set by where you create them**.

***

## 1) Tasks created from the file header

When you create a task\
from the task area in a document, plotboard, or sheet header,

that task\
**belongs to that file**.

* The linked file is set automatically
* In the task list it’s grouped under that file
* Clicking the task opens that file

So this way\
you create "an action for this file."\
The task moves with the file.

***

## 2) Tasks created from the inbox

When you press `+` in the task panel in the navigation bar\
and add a task directly to the inbox,

that task\
**is not tied to a file**.

* It exists as a global task
* Managed separately from any file
* You can link it to a file later if you want

So this is\
for "something to do that doesn’t have a home yet."\
You park it in the inbox.

## How they differ

| Where created | Link | Meaning |
| ------------- | ------------------- | -------------- |
| File header | Auto-linked to file | Run in context |
| Inbox | No file | Global to-do |

## Main idea

In Pensiv, tasks live at two levels:

* **Tasks that run in context** (from a file)
* **Tasks that don’t have context yet** (from inbox)

Where you create the task\
sets its place.

A task is not just a checkbox;\
it’s **where in the project structure** that action lives.
