# 10.2.3 Manage progress with labels and status

> Set labels and status in the document header, where they appear, how they differ

Labels and status are **document properties** you set in the document header.

They are not tied to one view; they apply to the document everywhere.

## Set a label in the document header

Click the **label icon** at the top right of the document to see color options.

Examples:

* No label
* Blue
* Red
* Green
* Orange
* Purple
* Yellow
* Add label

The color you choose is applied to that document.

### Where labels show up

When you set a label:

* 📁 Sidebar document icon color
* 📄 Card view color
* 🕒 Timeline track (document moves there)
* 🗂 All views (grid, list, etc.) use the same label

Labels are **document classification**, not just a view setting.

## Set status in the document header

Click the **status icon** next to the label to see status options.

Examples:

* No status
* Pre-revision draft
* To do
* Draft
* Final draft
* Done
* Add status

Choosing a status sets the document’s progress stage.

## Where status shows up

When you set a status:

* Status icon in the document header
* Status icon in card view
* Status on timeline cards
* You can sort and filter by status

Status is not limited to one view.

## Labels vs. status

| Property | Meaning              | Question it answers    |
| -------- | -------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Label    | Structure / category | Which part is this?    |
| Status   | Progress             | How far along is this? |

Label = structure. Status = progress.

## How to use them

### Structure design

* Labels → opening / rise / crisis / climax / resolution
* Status → planning / writing / revising / done

### Emotional arc

* Labels → conflict / calm / turn
* Status → draft / pre-revision / done

Then the sidebar and timeline alone show both structure and progress.
