# 10.2.4 Use labels and status with the timeline

> File header properties, what labels and status do, how the timeline shows them

Labels and status are not only for documents.

They are **shared properties on every file header**.

Documents, sheets, and other file types all use the same header controls.

The timeline is a view that shows these properties.

## 1. Set them in every file header

At the top right of each file you’ll see:

* 🏷 **Label**
* ● **Status**

They appear the same for every file type.

Changes apply to that file and appear in all views.

## 2. What labels do

Labels classify files by color.

When you set a label:

* 📁 Sidebar icon color
* 📄 Card view color
* 🕒 Timeline track (file moves to that track)
* 🗂 List, grid, etc. all show the same label

Labels answer: “What part of the structure is this?”

## 3. What status does

Status shows how far along the file is.

Examples:

* Pre-revision draft
* Draft
* Final draft
* Done

When you change status:

* It shows in the file header
* It shows on cards
* It shows on timeline cards
* You can sort and filter by it

Status answers: “Where is this in the workflow?”

## 4. How the timeline uses them

The timeline reads these properties and shows:

* Each color is its own track
* Files are placed on the right track
* Changing the label moves the file

### Status → on the card

* Status icon on the card
* Progress is visible at a glance

The timeline doesn’t have its own settings; it **shows** these file properties.

## 5. Manage structure and progress together

With labels and status you can:

* See how structure is distributed
* Check balance of emotional beats
* Find incomplete sections
* Decide what to work on next

All from the timeline view.

Label = structure. Status = progress.

Together they are the main axes of file management.
