# 10.1.5 Clean up repetition with word replace

> Auto-replace from settings, where to set it, how to use it, difference from find/replace

Word replace **automatically turns** certain words or symbols into other text as you type.

It’s not manual replace inside the document; it’s a **setting** that applies while you write.

***

## What is word replace?

You define rules; when you type the “from” text, it’s **replaced by** the “to” text.

Examples:

* `-` → `—`
* `<<` → `«`
* `[[` → a specific symbol
* Abbreviation → full form

So as you write, those substitutions happen automatically.

So:

> Word replace is not “fix it later”; it’s **“tidy as I type.”**

## Where do I set it?

Path: **Settings → Word replace**

There you can:

* Left field: text to replace
* Right field: replacement text
* Delete: remove a rule
* Add: add a new rule

You can add as many rules as you need.

***

## When to use it

### 1️⃣ Symbols and punctuation

* Special characters you use often
* Formatting separators
* Dialogue or quote marks

### 2️⃣ Frequent typos

Examples:

* "teh" → "the"
* Other habitual misspellings

### 3️⃣ Consistent terms

* "AI" → "AI" (or the form you want)
* Product or proper names

Keeps terminology consistent across the project.

***

## How to use it well

### 1️⃣ Prefer symbol and punctuation rules

Symbol substitution is stable and speeds up typing.

### 2️⃣ Avoid replacing full phrases everywhere

Replacing whole verbs or phrases can distort context.

### 3️⃣ Use it for terminology

Very effective for brand names, proper nouns, and setting-specific terms.

## Word replace vs. find/replace in the document

| Feature                  | When it applies       |
| ------------------------ | --------------------- |
| Find/replace in document | After the text exists |
| Word replace | As you type |

Word replace is not a revision tool; it’s an **input and consistency** tool.

***

## What to watch

* Don’t add rules for words that should change by context.
* Too many rules can cause unexpected replacements.
* Review your rules from time to time.

***

## Summary

* Word replace is a setting that auto-substitutes as you type.
* It replaces the text you define as soon as you type it.
* Good for symbols, typos, and consistent terms.
* It’s for **tidying the writing environment**, not for rewriting prose.

Word replace doesn’t fix the writing; it **tidies how you write**.
