If you came from Scrivener or Notion, the matching tables are here too. The words used in this documentation are lined up with the names on the app's screens. When a word is unclear, look it up here. ## What a project holds | Term | Meaning | | --------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Project | The outermost container that a whole manuscript goes into. It is what other tools call a project. | | Document | The file the manuscript goes into. One document usually holds one scene or one chapter. | | Folder | A container that groups files. It can hold documents, sheets, plotboards, and canvases. | | Sheet | The file where you write down **setting material** such as characters, places, and events. It keeps the details split into separate properties. | | Plotboard | The board where you lay the structure of the story out as cards. | | Canvas | An infinite board where you put cards anywhere and join them with lines. It holds thoughts before they are sorted out. | | File | The blanket word for the five above. Everything that shows as one row in the sidebar tree is a file. | ## Inside a plotboard | Term | Meaning | | --------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Plot card | One vertical column. It takes a large chunk such as an act, a part, or a chapter. | | Part card | The small card that stacks inside a plot card. It corresponds to one scene or one beat. | A part card can be linked to a document. Once linked, you jump straight from the card to the manuscript. ## Names for parts of the screen | Term | Where it is | | --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Sidebar | The vertical area on the left. The project name, search, the file tree, trash, and settings sit there from top to bottom. | | File tree | The file list in the middle of the sidebar. You collapse it, expand it, and drag things around in it. | | Editor | The middle area where you write the manuscript. | | Toolbar | The formatting row above the editor. Font, size, alignment, and the character count are here. | | Document header | The row at the very top of the editor. The file path and the icons on the right sit there. | | Side pane | The secondary area that opens from the right. Notes, comments, spell check, and AI Review come up here. | | Agent panel | The area where you talk with the AI. It attaches to the right. | | Command palette | The search-and-command window you open with `Cmd/Ctrl + K`. | | Tab | The list of open files that stacks above the editor. | | Split view | Splitting one pane left/right or top/bottom to see two files side by side. | ## Common actions | Term | Meaning | | ------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Mention | Typing `@` in the body to pull in another file. It becomes a link, and backlinks build up. | | Backlink | The list of other files that point to this file. | | Slash command | The insert menu you open by typing `/` in the body. | | Label | A colored marker attached to a file. It is for sorting. | | Status | How far along a file is. It marks stages such as Draft, Revised Draft, and Final Draft. | | Version | A snapshot of a document at one point in time. Some build up on their own; you can also leave one yourself with `Cmd/Ctrl + S`. | | Trash | Where a deleted file stays for 31 days. | ## AI terms | Term | Meaning | | --------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Agent | The AI that reads and writes files inside a project. You direct it by talking to it. | | Thread | One bundle of conversation with the agent. You can keep several and move between them. | | Scope | The unit that agent instructions apply to. You can set them across the whole workspace, or on one project only. | | Context | Files attached to this conversation for reference. It does not narrow the range the agent can see; it puts them on top as things to look at first in this conversation. | | Memory | Notes the agent holds on to about a project over the long term. | | Skill | A bundle of instructions written up in advance for work you ask for often. | | MCP | The standard that lets the agent attach and use outside tools. | | AI Review | A critique of a finished manuscript.
