# The built-in browser for research

> The built-in browser opens as a pane beside the manuscript, so you can keep a reference page open without leaving the app.

Looking things up means moving between windows, and that breaks your flow. The pensiv browser is a panel that opens inside the project, so you can keep it next to the manuscript. Pick **Go to Browser** in the command palette and it comes into the window you are already looking at; split the view vertically and you get the manuscript on the left and your research on the right.

## The address bar

Type an address and it goes there. Anything that does not look like an address goes to a Google search, and a bare domain such as `example.com` gets https added. The three buttons on the left are Back, Forward, and Reload. While a page is loading, Reload becomes Stop loading.

Click the three dots at the right end for Hard Reload, Copy Current URL, and Zoom. Zoom runs from 30% to 300% in steps of 10%. Links built to open in a new window also continue in the same panel instead of raising a popup window.

App shortcuts stay live inside the panel. `Cmd/Ctrl+T` opens one more browser tab, `Cmd/Ctrl+W` closes the current tab, and `Cmd/Ctrl+\` splits the view.

## Bookmarks

When **Show bookmark bar** is on and at least one bookmark is set to show, a bookmark row appears below the address bar. Click one to go straight there. If there is nothing to show, the row itself does not appear.

Bookmarks are managed by picking **Browser** from the plugin list in Settings. **Add Bookmark** adds a row; fill in **Title** and URL, and drag the handle on the left to reorder. The eye icon toggles between **Hide bookmark** and **Show bookmark**. A hidden bookmark stays in the list and drops only out of the bookmark bar. When there are none yet, it reads "No bookmarks yet. Add one to get started."

**Homepage** at the top of the same screen is the page shown when you open a new browser tab. Leave it empty and it goes to Google. The browser is a built-in plugin, so if you do not use it you can turn it off with the switch at the top right of this screen.
