In Pensiv, a section is not a folder that holds files;
it’s a unit that defines a role for your work. In the left sidebar you see
groups like Bookmarks and Projects.
Each of those is a section.

Sections are “work role,” not “organization”

A normal folder is a place to store files.
In Pensiv, a section is one level up.
  • Folder → where things are stored
  • Section → what role the work has
Examples:
  • Character section → manage character information
  • Plot section → design story structure
  • Document section → write the actual draft
  • Research section → organize reference material
So you don’t ask “where do I put this file?” first;
you ask “what role does this file have?”

How to add a section

Click the ⋯ menu next to a default section (e.g. Bookmarks, Projects).
Choose + Add section.

You can reorder sections by dragging

You can drag sections to change their order. That order is not just display;
it reflects how you work. Examples:
  • Character → Plot → Document
  • Research → Worldbuilding → Settings → Main text
You can arrange sections
to match the order of your thinking in the project.

What can you create inside a section?

From a section’s ⋯ menu you can add:
  • New document
  • New sheet
  • New plotboard
  • New canvas
  • New folder
So
sections are where you create files from.
Which section you create in
sets the file’s role and context.

Sections are structure units

Sections sit above files
and divide the project’s thinking. Pensiv is
not a tool for creating lots of files;
it’s a tool for
separating roles and
structuring thinking.
Sections are where that structure starts.

What to keep in mind

Once you get sections,
the project can grow without feeling messy.
  • Files can multiply.
  • Sections keep the thinking frame.
In Pensiv the first question isn’t
“where do I save this?” but
“what role does this thought have?”
