If you are going to keep writing

The screen you stay in longest is the editor. Go over the layout in Editor basics, then pick up paragraphs and emphasis in Formatting, and most of the writing is handled. After that it is a matter of taste. Adjust the font, line spacing, and margins in Editor settings, and when you land on a combination you like, tie it up as a preset. On days you want to write undisturbed, turn on focus mode. It also sets your mind at ease to know how to go back beforehand. Document history shows you the saved versions and returns you to the point you want.

If you have more of the story to work out

As characters and places multiply, organize them with sheets and sheet properties. If you want to see the relationships between characters, look at the relationship graph; if you want to lay out what happens before and after an event, look at the timeline. When the structure wobbles, move the order of scenes around by hand with plotboards and plot cards. If a thought is not yet a sentence, scattering it on a canvas is faster.

If you have a lot of files

Once a project swells to dozens of files, the time you spend finding beats the time you spend writing. Group them with folders, mark how far along they are with labels and status, and cross over with search and the command palette. If you need two files side by side, there is split view.

If you want to attach more tools

If you want to hand the manuscript to an AI, start by reading Agent overview. What you can ask it to do and what it cannot do comes first. When a finished manuscript needs a critique, there is a separate AI review. Changing the screen or adding features is the side of plugins and themes. If you start projects with the same structure again and again, templates save you time.
